Rio Real recently received a visit from two key players on the UK golfing scene. Danny Adams, a PGA UK professional and golf coach, joined Robert Palmer, a senior commentator on Sky Sports. Both played the Rio Real course and we interviewed them after their round.
Absolutely outstanding
Adam’s first accolades went to the beauty of the course itself. “Absolutely outstanding,” he said, “complemented by palm trees and big beautiful bunkers”. Palmer agreed – “these greens are pristine all year round,” was his comment on the course condition. “These greens are in absolute prime condition,” added Adams.

The two then moved on to the game itself. Adams most admired the “challenge of each hole” when he played golf at Rio Real. “Each is uniquely different,” he said, before adding that he found the fairways a true challenge and hit a birdie at the 11th.

For Palmer, this is “an amazing course” and he too highlighted the challenges at every turn. “It’s tight so if you got off the fairways you can get hidden behind a tree,” was his main observation.
Great clubhouse
The amenities only add to the experience when you play golf at Rio Real and Palmer was particularly impressed with the Club House. “It’s serene and tranquil, and a great escape from Marbella, just down the road,” he said.

Confirmed return
When asked if they’d be back, both golfers couldn’t have been more emphatic. “All day long, all day long,” said Adams. And as for Palmer, he agreed and said the two “had had a ball”. “This is a course with absolutely everything,” according to the commentator.
Their visit confirms the meteoric rise of Rio Real up the rankings of the best golf courses in Spain this year. Rio Real rose 29 slots in the Top 100 Best Golf Courses in Spain in 2018. “The oldest course in the Marbella area, rockets an astonishing 29 spots up to number 38”, said Jim McCann, editor of the rankings in his comments on this year’s position.
McCann discovered for himself what it’s like to play golf at Rio Real last year when he included the course on his visit to the Costa del Sol. “What’s apparent right away is that this is a club which appeals to the more discerning golfer,” he said, adding that this is “a proper golf club”.
